Find the active runbook OPS-2223

Lab machine

A private Linux machine with the problem already set up. Sessions last up to 60 minutes.
Tomas Berg opened OPS-2223 at 10:20task

Last night's page sent Tomas to a runbook for a service that was retired a year ago. He spent twenty minutes restarting something that does not exist.

The pager message includes a link to the runbook for the alerting service. The link comes from ops/oncall.conf. It still points at the archived Waybill runbook from before the 2025 rebuild.

"I followed the runbook in the page, like you are supposed to. Can someone make the page point at the one that is actually current? I am on nights again tonight." (Tomas)

There are several runbooks that mention Waybill. One is archived, one says it was superseded, and one is marked active. Its file name changes from depot to depot, so you will have to search rather than guess.

Your task

Search docs/ for the Waybill runbook whose status is active, then change only the runbook = line in ops/oncall.conf to point at it, using a path relative to the lab directory like the one already there.

On the machine

  • docs/runbooks/ and docs/archive/
  • ops/oncall.conf, the pager configuration
  • The Status: line at the top of each runbook

Timeline

03:12Waybill alert pages Tomas. The page links to docs/archive/waybill.md.
03:14Tomas runs service waybill-old restart. "unrecognized service".
03:34Mara, woken up, points him at the right runbook.
10:20Tomas files OPS-2223: fix the link before tonight.

Done when

  1. The runbook line in ops/oncall.conf points at the active Waybill runbook.
  2. The other settings in ops/oncall.conf are unchanged.

Hints

Hint 1

grep -ril waybill docs lists every file that mentions Waybill.

Hint 2

Read the Status line of each one. grep -r 'Status:' docs helps.

Hint 3

docs/runbooks/waybill.md says it is superseded and tells you what to look for.

Hint 4

Edit only the runbook = line, using a path relative to the lab directory.

Show the solution

grep -rl 'Status: active' docs | xargs grep -l waybill.service finds the active runbook. Then set runbook = docs/runbooks/<that file> in ops/oncall.conf with an editor or sed.
